Open For Interpretation

Invitation mailers for the opening night event of an imagined MoMA exhibition of collage art incorporating the sound collages of the band Negativland. A postcard mailer was designed to be sent to museum members, and a specialty invitation was designed for VIP invitees for the opening night event. The final piece is a gift for attendees.

The event title "Open to Interpretation" inspired a logo based on an Open sign, and mailers that open in a variety of ways. Collage imagery is combined with clean, modern type, and each piece involves user interaction.

The postcard mailer for all museum members uses transparent red film and red ink to create a decoder, so that information is hidden or revealed as the card is pulled out. The second mailer is for VIP invitees, and uses 5 sound recording devices (like those in greeting cards) to allow the user to record and play back 20 second sound bites to make their own "sound collages" in the style of the band Negativland. The VIP attendee gift comes in a cassette tape case and includes a card with a code to download a Negativland album and a fold-out poster using collage imagery (including pieces in the exhibition).
